The 2020 ten birr is the lowest denomination of Ethiopia’s new series. The front shows a lion, a camel and the coffee harvest, and the back a genre scene with people. According to the bank, the new notes reflect the country’s natural and historical features and its plans for the future, industrialisation and modern agriculture.
The National Bank of Ethiopia put the new series into circulation on 14 September 2020. The currency change was announced by the Prime Minister’s office: the authorities sought to bring back into the banks cash circulating outside the financial system and to strike at corruption and contraband.
The series replaced the 10, 50 and 100 birr notes that had circulated since the late 1990s and added a new denomination, 200 birr. The notes are dated 2012 in the Ethiopian calendar, which corresponds to 2020.
For an Ethiopia collection this is the first step of the 2020 series, and in a set on coffee on banknotes it shows the coffee harvest beside a lion and a camel. AU-UNC condition sits at the edge of uncirculated: there are virtually no signs of circulation, at most one light fold or a faint counting mark.
